How long will food stay fresh in the refrigerator?

Refrigerator Food Safety, Shanghai, China

Have you wondered if you throw things from your fridge out before it's necessary, then perhaps it is time to update your knowledge. Some foods must be removed fast for your health's sake, and others can last longer.

Once the seal is broken, it is only common sense to prevail. Durability depends on what food it is and how it is wrapped.

- One may wonder how long the items will last once we open the packages. One consequence is the food waste, because you are in doubt about when you have opened the packages, says nutritionist Preben Vestergaard Hansen at Metropolitan University College.

Keep right

Many also fill too much food in the refrigerator and thus the temperature rises. You can easily feel if the fridge is cold or warm, but not the actual temperature. Also, be sure to defrost your refrigerator well, so it cools better.

Most refrigerators have a vegetable drawer at the bottom of it, but it is, according to Preben Vestergaard Hansen silly to keep the vegetables there.

Vegetables must namely be kept in a dark and cool place to stay fresh, so they should not be kept in the fridge, but instead in the garage, utility room or a dark drawer in the kitchen.

Read here how long different foods stay fresh once the seal is broken.

Fish

Raw fish, minced fish and cod roe must be used the same day. Prepared fish should be eaten the next day. Smoked fish can be kept for 4 days with broken packaging. For dug salmon is 1-2 days. Marinated herring in a glass or jar 8 days. Mackerel, tuna, kippers or cod roe should be used within 2 days. Clams, caviar and shrimp are among the most perishable and should be eaten from day to day.

Meat

Raw beef can be kept for 3-4 days. There are 2-3-4 days for pork and chicken meat. Raw innards must be used from day to day. Sliced meats keeps 2-4 days depending on the nature - dug meat about 1-2 days. A well-cured salami can last longer - up to 10 days. Canned meat should be stored in the same way as a fresh products and lasts for 2-3 days.

Prepared food

If the leftovers from your dinner is heated and then cooled in an orderly fashion, the dish can keep fresh for 2-3 days in refrigerator. You should not reheat the same dish more than once!

Bread

Bread should be kept dark and dry. An old-fashioned bread tray is actually not a bad thing to buy. Once in place, bread will stay fresh for up to 5 days.

Fruit

It depends on the coating, but the fruit should be stored dry and dark. Wrinkles and dark spots can occur before the fruit must be discarded, simply cut off, it is not dangerous. Fruits should also be kept separate from vegetables, because vegetables can induce maturation and thus speed up the decay or the fruit. Do not store bananas in plastic bags or boxes as this will speed up the maturation and decay sets in. This is due to the buildup of CO2 in the bag or box.

Potatoes

Will sprout in warm conditions and if stored too cold potatoes will get mealy. Potatoes should be stored dark and dry at about 6-10 degrees. When properly stored potatoes can keep for several months.
